Open Labs and Workshops

Here you will find an overview of open labs and workshops in Hamburg. There are different ways to become active in the workshops, from club memberships to day tickets. Some machines require an introductory workshop before use, other devices can also be put into operation directly. The information about the equipment of the labs and workshops, their machines, tools and devices are gradually being integrated into the 'Fab Map', made available for filtering and maintained by the organizations involved.

Curious Community Labs

Focus of work in the Lab: Education, science and research, nature and environmental protection, open-source hardware and software development, circular economy, bioeconomy (biotechnology, biovalues, food production)

Fab City Lab Hühnerposten

Founded: 2022 as a cooperation with the Bücherhallen Hamburg (Hamburg Public Library Foundation). The Fab City Lab Hühnerposten is funded by the Ministry of Economics and Innovation and operated by the Fab City Hamburg e.V. association.
Location: The entrance to Fab City Lab Hühnerposten is located on level 0 opposite the book flea market. Barrier-free access from the south side; Hühnerposten 1, 20097 Hamburg.

Focus of work in the Lab:
In the Fab City Lab Hühnerposten, guests can get to know typical equipment of a makerspace such as 3D printers, milling machines and laser cutters under the motto Tinkering, Learning, Trying. In courses, various techniques of modern manufacturing technology are taught and large and small Maker*innen are supported with advice and assistance.

Fab Lab Fabulous St. Pauli

Founded: 2011 on St. Pauli.
Location: currently in Oberhafen; Stockmeyerstr. 43, Halle 4k, 20457 Hamburg.

Focus of work in the Lab: Innovation and invention at the intersection of electronics, design, art and robotics. Learning and working together - no one has to tinker away alone. Or, as a smart person once described it: “the Hamburg DIY center for DIY Culture”.

Machines and devices in the lab: 3D Printers: Ultimaker 2, Formlabs Form 3 LFS/SLA, Leapfrog Dual Extruder FDM, DLP Printer (under rebuild); XYZ Printing 3D Scanner 1.0 A (portable);
Cutting - Plotting - Cutting: Epilog Zing laser cutter (60 W, 60 x 30 cm work surface), Secabo C60III cutting plotter, Craft Robo cutting plotter;
Milling: 3-axis CNC router (home-made, 170x120 cm work surface), Roland iModela CNC router, lathe;

HALL 4 CRCLRTY - Open Lab Circular Textiles

Founded: 2022 in Neustadt, operated by House of All UG according to CSX principles (monthly fee).

Focus of work in the Lab:
Education, research and development in the field of circular design of textiles: Experimentation with manufacturing techniques & design on the way to a Fab City also in the field of textiles.
Use of clothing as an alternative to buying: Pool of clothing can be used by members.
Showroom to present the work of local designers, Fabricademy Node.

HofaLab e.V.

Founded: 2019 in Wilhelmsburg

Focus of work in the Lab: The HoFaLab is since 2019 “Your Hobby Fab Lab in Wilhelmsburg”, a place for creative production as well as artistic research. HoFaLab e.V. is aimed at (media) artists, hobbyists and anyone interested in learning to use technology in everyday life in a self-determined and responsible way. To this end, we promote the acquisition of new technologies and manufacturing methods in the neighborhood in workshops. The focus is on the shared experience of application and the HoFaLab as a contact point for people with and without expertise.

Machines and devices in the lab: 3D printers: FDM: Prusa i3 MK3S+, 2x Prusa MINI+, Creality CR-30 Beltprinter, HyperCuboid (OLSK); SLA: Elegoo Mars 2 PRO, Elegoo Mercury-Plus Wash&Cure.
Cutting - Plotting - Cutting: FABULASER MINI (CO2 40W, 60 x 40cm working surface), cutting plotter, pen plotter (home-made).
Milling: *3 axis CNC router Makersmill (X 290 x Y 160 x Z 50mm). Electronics: Soldering station, (pliers) multimeter, analog oscilloscope, circuit boards, Dupont/JST connector assortment with pliers, etc.

Insel e.V.

Founded: 2022
Location: Elbgaustr. 244 22547, Hamburg; the workshop is located at the back left of the building. Please use the left entrance (gate 2) and go through the corridor on the left around the building. If you do not find the workshop: Look for signs of “Insel e.V.” or ask someone in the yard.

Focus of work in the Lab: The “Open Recycling Workshop” of the Insel e.V. offers access to sustainability, education and modern technology. These things should be available to ALL, because they are still often exclusive. Exclusivity implies exclusion. That means people are excluded and do not have the same opportunities. The workshop in Lurup stands for participation. With joy and an approach based on solidarity, inclusion and inventiveness, the team of Insel e.V. want to create an open space for ALL, where everyone can do sustainable things together. Or drink coffee together.

OpenLab Hamburg

Founded: 2016 in Jenfeld.
Location: Campus of Helmut Schmidt University in Jenfeld; Holstenhofweg 85, 22043 Hamburg.

Focus of work in the Lab: The Lab can be used for prototype development for startups, as well as for research and student projects, or for tinkering and tinkering in your free time.

Focus of work in the Lab: Woodwork (e.g. furniture making, restoration, camper interior), 3D printing and electrical tinkering, less frequently metal and textile work.

Machinery and equipment in the Lab: Sizing saw, band saw, chop saw, lathe, thickness & jointer, stationary router, routers, small CNC router, jigsaws, plunge saws, all imaginable grinders, dowel cutters, welders, angle grinders, sewing machines, 3D printers, soldering equipment.
