OpenLab MedTec at the German Armed Forces Hospital Hamburg

Innovative solutions emerge precisely where challenges arise. Learn more about the groundbreaking OpenLab MedTec at Bundeswehr Hospital Hamburg and its vision to solve on-site medical technology issues.

With the ceremonial unveiling at the end of June at Bundeswehr Hospital Hamburg, the OpenLab MedTec marks a significant stride forward under the motto “Solving Problems Where They Emerge.” This unique establishment merges cutting-edge medical technologies and digital manufacturing machines to devise innovative solutions for medical technology challenges. The focus lies on developing, implementing, and testing ideas directly on-site, aiming to sidestep costly production processes.

The OpenLab MedTec represents a pioneering initiative concentrating on medical technology development. Leveraging a fusion of state-of-the-art medical technologies and digital fabrication facilities, the OpenLab MedTec serves as a frontrunner among open workshops. It’s not only a hub for ideas but also a place where these concepts are translated into reality and subjected to practical trials. This pragmatic approach circumvents intricate production processes, facilitating the creation of locally applicable solutions.

A noteworthy achievement of the OpenLab MedTec is the advancement of the Open Source Low-Field MRI Scanner, OSI² ONE, designed for mobile use. With production costs as low as €20,000, this MRI scanner introduces novel possibilities, especially in developing regions.

The collaboration between Helmut-Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt forms the cornerstone of the OpenLab MedTec. This groundbreaking project receives support from the dtec.bw Fab City project, funded by the NextGenerationEU financing of the European Union.
