Fab City Global
, a global movement for greater
independence
The Future Is Taking Shape Here
Cities that can do more
on their own
Fab City isn’t just a Hamburg project—it’s a global movement. More than 50 cities and regions around the world are working to reduce their dependence on long supply chains and instead build up local production and a circular economy. Hamburg is part of this network and, together with other cities, is learning how to make a livable, resilient future a reality.
What's Behind It
The Fab City Global Initiative connects cities, organizations, and communities that openly share knowledge and collaboratively develop solutions. It is based on shared values such as sustainability, openness (open source), and a bottom-up approach: Change happens where people live and work—in neighborhoods, workshops, schools, and businesses.
Knowledge in, knowledge out
The goal is a fundamental shift: away from the“products in, waste out”principle—toward“knowledge in, knowledge out.” Specifically, this means that designs, blueprints, and know-how are shared globally, while materials and products are manufactured, repaired, and reused locally as much as possible. This creates local value, reduces waste, and increases independence.
One network, many cities—one direction
Join
the movement!
The Fab City Network includes more than 50 Fab Cities and regions worldwide. Each city charts its own course, but they all share the same goal: to expand local, circular production systems by 2054 so that cities can meet a much larger portion of their needs locally.
Hamburg is part of the movement. You can be, too! Discover how the Fab City Global Initiative is shaping the cities of tomorrow and stay up to date on our projects.
