What We're All About

Fab City is not an abstract vision, but a practical approach to successfully shaping the circular economy at the local level. We rely on open-source hardware and digital manufacturing: knowledge, blueprints, and solutions are made openly accessible so that good ideas don’t disappear into drawers, but can be replicated, improved, and shared. This strengthens technological sovereignty and makes Hamburg less dependent on fragile supply chains.

Fab City stands for openness, transparency, and participation: Whenever possible, we rely on open source, promote data sovereignty as a public good, and design processes to be transparent and inclusive.

Innovation Made in Hamburg

In June 2019, Hamburg became the first German city to join the global Fab City initiative. Building on this momentum, FabCity Hamburg e.V. was founded in October 2020 in collaboration with Hamburg-based Fab Labs, makerspaces, workshops, startups, and research institutions. Since then, we have been working to build a city where people don’t just consume, but also make, learn, and share again.

Fab City Hamburg e.V. is part of the global Fab City Initiative, which includes the Fab City Foundation in Tallinn (Estonia) and the Fab City Collective. This creates a network of currently more than 50 cities and regions worldwide, where we learn from one another and work together to implement the Fab City Vision 2054. And where Hamburg is actively helping to shape how local production will become the future of cities.
