Sounds exciting—but you’re not circular design experts? Perfect!
That’s exactly what the Circular Design Hub Hamburg is for. Together with experts from our network, we support interested teams on their journey to building their own circular boat.
Building circular boats together,
—thinking circularly together.
RE:BOAT is a real-world laboratory created by Fab City Hamburg, Circular Design Hub Hamburg, Till Wolfer, and N55.
WHY RE:BOAT?
RE:BOAT asks you: What happens when materials from used products don't just disappear, but are reused in new products?
We want to rethink old production principles:
Old: It's LINEAR
Raw materials are imported > The product is manufactured > You buy and use it > You throw it away > The product is gone
New: It's called CIRCULAR
The circular economy changes everything: You buy and use the product, take advantage of the services (e.g., repair, resell) > you return 100% of the product to the cycle
RE:BOAT demonstrates the creative power that emerges when materials remain in the stay in circulation.
The circular economy is the future. The future starts now.
Here's HOW to get involved
1 — BUILD
Teams build boats capable of completing a circuit in one of the four boat classes.
2 — RACE
The boats are launched in public. As proof of registration for the regatta, you will receive a
Will your idea carry you to the finish line? In this regatta, it's not just speed that counts—it's creativity, sustainability, and team spirit. You can find details in the (Info button:) Rules and Regulations
3 — CELEBRATE
The fun at the regatta and awards ceremony, the boat exhibition, workshops, talks, music, and material experiments make the circular economy an experience for everyone.

RE: BOAT RULES
1 — MATERIAL PASSPORT REQUIREMENT:
Every boat must have a material passport containing information on the origin, composition, reusability, and recycling of the materials used.
2 — LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT:
In addition to speed, there are up to 100 circularity points (40 points for material circularity, 20 points for modularity/dismantlability, 20 points for material safety/non-toxicity, and 20 points for communication design and narrative).
3 — NO PRIMARY RAW MATERIALS:
New materials are permitted only if they are bio-based and can be fully recycled without any loss or downcycling.
4 — EQUIPMENT AUDIT:
Before the start, a jury reviews the boat and equipment pass and awards a Circular Label.
5 — CIRCULAR DOCK:
After the race, the boats are displayed with their material pass and circular label. Visitors can experience and understand the material resources and circular processes used in the construction of the boat.

HH Sustainability week
29.6. - 1.7.2026
