Maker spaces are open workshops where you can use modern tools to design, build, repair, and improve things. They are a key component of urban production in Hamburg: practical, collaborative, and closely tied to everyday life.

At Hamburg's maker spaces, you can experiment, repair, and build —from 3D printing to working with wood, plastic, metal, or electronics.

Our map shows you where to get started, what machinesand what’s on offer. Some machines require a brief introduction, but you can also learn how to use many of them right there on the spot.

What to Expect at the Maker Space

You don't have to be a pro to get started. The most important step is to just go for it. Some typical examples include:

OpenLab Mobile brings digital manufacturing and the circular economy to the Hamburg metropolitan region free of charge: 

In a mobile maker space, participants learn how to turn an idea into a real object—using 3D modeling and 3D printing.

How It All Began

the maker-
movement

As early as the 1960s, machines were increasingly controlled by computers (Computer-Aided Manufacturing). This made production more precise, faster, and easier to plan.

 

The decisive step toward an “open workshop” came in 1998:

 

At MIT, physicist Neil Gershenfeld made digital fabrication machines available to students, thereby giving rise to the concept of Fab Labs (Fabrication Labs):

A place where you can make “almost anything” yourself, with knowledge that is shared.

 

As 3D printers and other machines became more affordable in the 2000s, the maker movement emerged: technology and manufacturing were no longer reserved solely for industry but became accessible to interested citizens, schools, creative professionals, and startups.
